Hawaii Muzzleloader Hunting Season

  • The Muzzleloader Hunt will be conducted for one (1) Weekend (Saturday and Sunday), March 14 and 15, 2020.
  • The General Rifle Hunt will be held over nine (9) consecutive Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), beginning March 21, 2020 and ending on May 17, 2020.

Hawaii Muzzleloader Hunting Season Regulations

During the Hawaii Muzzleloader Hunting Season a muzzleloading rifle or shotgun means a rifle or shotgun that must be loaded through the discharged end of the firearm or the barrel and that employs flint or percussion ignition. Muzzleloading rifles and shotguns must have a shoulder stock and a barrel length of at least eighteen inches. Muzzleloading rifles, with less than a 44 caliber (0.44) bore diameter regardless of mode of ignition. Breech loaders are prohibited during muzzleloader only specified hunts A muzzleloading firearm is considered unloaded if the ignition component (primer, percussion cap or priming powder) is removed from the ignition system, and for flintlocks the powder is removed from the pan, the frizzen is up and the cock (hammer) is down. Cartridge firing and muzzleloading firearms must be unloaded just as described above to enter any safety zone or to transport the firearm in a vehicle within the hunting area. However, when crossing or entering a public highway or exiting a public hunting area, all fire-able cartridges and muzzleloader firing components must be removed from the firearm including powder and projectile(s).

Hunting in Hawai‘i requires a hunting license whether you hunt on public or private land. How to obtain a hunting license in Hawai‘i. In order to purchase a Hawai‘i Hunting License, you must possess one of the following documents:

  • a Hawai‘i Hunter Education Wallet Card; or
  • a Letter of Exemption, which may be completed online –click here .

Hawai‘i Hunter Education Wallet Cards are issued to graduates of our basic Hunter Education course and you may use it to purchase a Hawai‘i Hunting License directly from a license agent at various retail locations throughout the state. You may also purchase your Hawai‘i Hunting License online. Letters of Exemption are issued free to those who have an out-of-state hunter education card or a Hawai‘i Hunting License issued prior to July 1, 1990. If you’re a nonresident without a hunter education card, contact your local hunter education office and find out how, when, and where to enroll in a hunter education course in your home state/province. Once you get your hunter education certificate, you may go online to our Hunting License Application website and complete the non-resident Letter of Exemption form online. Once your form is processed you will receive a email with procedures to follow that will allow you to purchase a Hawai‘i hunting license. Unfortunately, many hunters don’t plan or research their hunting trips before traveling to Hawai‘i and are turned away at the license agent’s counter because they were unaware of this license requirement.
